Juniper Creek Outfitters at Lee Baysden Pond

Published: March 3, 2024 | North Carolina

Hidden deep in rural eastern North Carolina is a camping and fishing oasis on Lee Baysden Pond in the tiny community of Chinquapin. While we were here we checked out everything they have to offer – the A-Frame cabin, the RV parking sites, the tent campsites, the fishing, the canoe/peddle boat rentals, etc. It’s a fun weekend getaway for those in easter or central North Carolina for sure.

One of the most impressive aspects of the A-Frame is that it was built by hand by the campground hosts. Not just built, but all the materials were sourced or recycled from their property. The wood used for the siding and structural elements was milled from the poplar trees on the hosts private property. The corrugated metal roofing was recycled from some outdoor awning they had used in a previous residence and prior to that it was farm animal house roofing. Impressive!

The A-Frame cabin is a glamping experience. What does that mean? To me it means, camping, but with the luxury of a roof over your head and a soft mattress to sleep on. They’ve included a few additional bonuses like AC and a small portable heater, a mini fridge, and microwave. You will need to bring your own bedding for the bed and your own dishes and cookware.

Other than the microwave, your cooking options are the provided grate to place over the outdoor fire pit – perfect for grilling your favorite meals. You aren’t super close to stores or restaurants so you will want to come prepared with a cooler to store your food items. Another bonus, the hosts partner with a number of local vendors to provide things like floral arrangements, snack plates, chocolates, etc. You could make this a romantic outing if you want!

Also contributing to the glamping experience is the outdoor shower with hot water. It has a concrete grate floor with corrugated metal walls to match the roof of the A-Frame. They have provided a Port-A-John as your toilet facilities just a few steps away.

RV Camping & Tent Camping

If you’re an RV’er and passing through on the way to the beach, this is a great stop to soak in the peace and quiet. There are several RV parking spots to choose from with power and water. They also have a dump station for your convenience. All the spots overlook the waterfront where you can enjoy the abundance of wildlife while you’re camping.

On the other side of the property are multiple tent camping sites with fire rings and picnic tables. If you enjoy nature and need a place to escape it all, these are the camping spots for you. Bring your tent, coolers and a fishing pole to get recharged.

We really enjoyed our time at Juniper Creek Outfitters. If you’re in eastern North Carolina, be sure to stop in and check them out. It’s worth the quick jump off I-40 to soak in the beauty.
